I’m not a big American or British Idol fan, but I couldn’t help being moved by the Susan Boyle story.
Susan appeared on British Idol recently, and solely because of her unfortunate looks, was laughed at, mocked and ridiculed when she took center stage. For no good reason, it was thought she was a joke. Talk about judging a book by its cover.
Then she began to sing, and something magical happened…………..
Her voice was spectacular, if not angelic. This humble lady, who spent her days caring for her elderly mother, was an over-night success, a hit, who brought the crowd to their feet for a thunderous applause. Now she is known all over the world. From a little town in Scotland she made a meteoric rise from the depths to stardom.
Indeed, this might be the feel-good story of the year.
If you have not seen the performance, it is worth checking out on youTube, where many millions around the world have hit on this story. I’m usually not a sappy type of guy, but the video is a must-see. It has brought tears to many eyes.
I’m reminded of the regular, every day people I’ve met in 26 years of law practice — the under-dogs who only need an opportunity to shine, the good and humble folks who go about their lives without any fanfare. My kind of people, indeed.
